How can we make security, and the study of military sciences, more inclusive? The organisers of the 2020 ISMS Conference are inviting participants to challenge their preconceptions about how, why, on what and for whom we do research on the area of military sciences. The co-chairs of the Armed Forces and Society Working Group encourage presenters to share ideas and ongoing research on themes related to inclusive security, including, but not limited to:

  • Women, peace, and security agenda and military operations;
  • Gender and armed forces;
  • Operational effectiveness in peacekeeping operations;
  • Diversity in security sector reforms;
  • Evolution of human security doctrine;
  • Vulnerable populations and military interventions;
  • Armed forces and the responsibility to protect (R2P);
  • Principles of inclusive security in pre-deployment training;
  • Diversity in international security organisations;
  • Best practices for inclusive security research;
  • Connecting security studies scholars, policymakers and civil society;
  • Impact of the covid-19 pandemic on peace support operations.

All presentations involving forward-looking concepts of inclusive security in armed forces, conflict, peace support operations, or other security environments in a national or international context, will be welcome.

Abstracts should provide valuable scientific insight for the international community of military professionals and scholars. Abstracts should be 600 – 1,000 words in length and should identify:

  • The research problem or question investigated
  • The basic design of the study, including sources and methods
  • The major findings of your study
  • A summary of your interpretations and conclusions
  • The relevance of your work for the specific audience and wider community of practice
